Dates to celebrate in 2015

At Kate's we make it our business to keep an eye on the calendar so that when the time comes you can be sure that special card and gift is close at hand.

1st January

Let's peak early with the ultimate celebration and the UK’s top excuse for a party New Year's Day

25th January

Burn’s night is another great excuse to celebrate North of the boarder. Robert Burns the much loved Scottish poet and his birthday is celebrated every year in Scotland.

14th Februay

Time for love it’s Valentine’s Day. Traditionally a time when a secret admirer can let you know with a card that they want to be more than just friends.  Valentine’s Day is not just about finding new love though, it’s probably the best chance you’ll get all year to tell the one you love you care too.

  Valentine's Day

17th  February

Random Acts of Kindness Day.  Just in case you haven’t been generous enough on Valentine’s Day, today is the day you can treat someone who least expects it.  It doesn’t have to be giving someone that gift they’ve always wanted, but it’s not Random Acts to Disappoint Day, so get on it...

17th  February

Shrove Tuesday, or to the rest of us, it’s Pancake day.  On the eve of 40 days of Christian fasting, or Lent, our advice is to make the most of today and get your frying pan out.

19th  February

Chinese New Year often goes off unnoticed, but this year is the year of the Goat so it promises to be an interesting one.  Annoying when the Chinese closes for the celebrations though isn’t it. By the way next year is the year of the Monkey - can’t wait...

19th February

Kate’s Birthday Giveaway day. At Kate’s we like a good giveaway and if you keep in touch on Twitter and Facebook you’ll be the first to know when one’s going down, but every year you can rely on Kate to have a great big giveaway on her birthday.

1st March

St David’s Day is the Patron Saint of Wales and today marks his death.

8th March

International Women's Day has been Celebrated since the 1900s and remains at the forefront women’s rights campaigning for greater awareness of equality and wants to see more women in positions of power. We’re a big fan at Kate’s and you can find more about what International Women’s Day has achieved at www.internationalwomensday.com.

15th March

Mother's Day or Mothering Sunday, is the one day in the year where Mum can officially put herself first, look forward some special visitors and enjoy a few treats.  Mother’s day is also a chance to say thank you to Grandmothers, stepmums and, believe it or not, the Mother-in-law. Many children take their mum to lunch, but for those who can’t make it they usually send their Mother’s a card or gift. Mother’s Day is getting bigger and bigger and at Kate’s it’s our busiest time after Christmas,

Mother's Day

17th March

Hello Ireland it’s Saint Patrick's Day, the Patron Saint of Ireland

1st April

April Fools Day It’s a great pity, but this date is not officially celebrated by any country. It is, though, a lot of fun for everyone and the UK’s favourite day for silly pranks.  The general idea is that you make someone believe something false is true.  Some people call this idea politics, but April fools day is much less serious than that...  No one really knows why April the first is a fool’s day, but it’s probably something to do with ancient calendars celebrating New Year on the 1st April and the amusing pastime (before T.V. and the Internet) of sending someone on a fool’s errand?  If you have any more ideas, let us know...

3rd, 5th 6th April

Easter. With as many official holidays as Christmas Easter is bank holiday city. The feast starts on a sober note with Good Friday which is a day off to go to church and think about the crucifixion. The mood soon lightens up though as Jesus comes back to life on Easter Sunday and we can all celebrate again. Confusingly the dates Easter is celebrated change depending on the first full moon after the start of spring, or the Vernal Equinox.  Traditionally on Easter Sunday it’s a time to give and receive chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday, and more recently cards and Easter gifts.

25th October

Mother-In-Law Day.  As the legendary UK comedian Les Dawson once said: “You know when the Mother-In-law is coming to stay as the mice throw themselves on the traps.” We’re only joking.  Go on give her a card...

25th October

British Summertime Ends. Don’t forget to put those clocks back before you go to bed and you’ll get an extra hour in bed.  Pity they don’t have to go back an hour every day...

31st October

Halloween.  Like Christmas Turkey, Disney and McDonalds Halloween is as much a part of British culture as it is for our cousins across the pond.  It’s a time when we dress up as monsters and fiends and the kids knock on neighbours doors offering  simple choice: To trick or to treat.  Most people choose to pass on a few treats and the ghouls disappear, but a few opt for the trick and normally the worst that happens is the grumpy neighbours get a light dusting in flour.

Christmas Cards

26th December

Boxing Day. When we researched the day after Christmas Day we didn’t find any reference to packing stuff, or bare-knuckle boxing, but what were surprised to discover was that Boxing Day should really be called Servants Day as today is the day that the landowners and bosses gave their employees their Christmas Boxes.

31st December

Hogmanay. Is a Scottish word that is loosely translated in the English to mean “Party Time”.
