Mental Health Awareness Week 2018

There is a mental health awareness week every year in the UK at the beginning of May. Unfortunately, mental health issues don’t just bloom with the flowers in Spring, they are prevalent for 12 full months of the year. Here at Love Kate’s, we empathise with the challenges that poor mental health can bring about, hence why we are passionate about reaching out, raising awareness and spreading kindness. Helping someone who is struggling with mental health issues can be difficult, especially if you don’t understand what they’re going through.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2018

Here are some things to consider:

1) They might find it hard to ask you for help. Depending on the obstacles the person is faced with; a lot of people can find it really difficult to reach out during periods of low mental health. Make the first move.

2) They might feel like a burden. Confronting mental health issues can be exhausting. It can lead to lack of self-worth which can often make people feel like a burden. Offer reassurance and remind your loved one how special they are.

3) Little things can mean the world. Small things can mean so much, whether it’s good or bad. Slight inconveniences can trigger real negative feelings, whilst small positive movements can make you feel invincible. Sending a card to someone who is struggling could be the outstretched hand they’ve been pleading for, or simply just the small act of kindness that will brighten their spirits.

A card seems so simple, right?

Yet, sending a card can communicate the words that you’ve been choking on for a while, they can offer the hug that you’re not quite close enough to give, and they can make someone smile when they least expect it. It can be difficult to know what the right thing is to say to someone who is suffering, you don’t want to upset them or make them feel uncomfortable. But do you know what’s worse than saying the wrong thing? Saying nothing at all. Individuals who are grappling with poor mental health are still individuals – what makes them laugh? What are their interests and hobbies? There’s a card for pretty much everything, here at Love Kate’s.
